Your adventure begins with a convenient pickup from your hotel in Antigua. The climb up Acatenango takes you through four distinct microclimates, each lasting about an hour.
You’ll start by ascending a stiff path through local farmland. This is the same trail villagers use to access their crops, and it offers a fantastic warm-up for your legs, getting them ready for the journey ahead.
Next, you’ll enter an ancient, high-alpine cloud forest. This unique forest, found on the higher slopes of Guatemala’s tallest volcanoes, is a haven for exotic birds, including the famous and elusive resplendent quetzal. As you emerge from the cloud forest around midday, you’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of other highland volcanoes like Atitlán, Tolimán, San Pedro, Santa María, Santo Tomás, and Tajamulco. Your campsite is strategically located just below this tree line, offering sweeping views of the Antigua Valley and the active Volcán Fuego right next door. After setting up camp, take a moment to stretch, relax, and absorb the vastness around you while your guide prepares a delicious dinner at an elevation of 12,300 feet (3,750 m). Here, you’ll be treated to breathtaking 360-degree views of the Guatemalan highlands stretching all the way to Mexico. - FAQ´s
FAQ´s
Can I drink the water here?
There are either clay cased filters, or water jugs, in each hotel or in our offices- you can always drink these filtered sources of water. In restaurants, you can also ask for filtered water or bottled water. We recommend against swallowing tap water while brushing teeth.
How much money will I need for the trip?
We recommend about $200 per person. You will need money to pay for drinks at dinners (about $3 per drink), as well as any souvenirs you’d like to purchase. Otherwise, you can keep your wallets and passports in our safe at our office.
***Please keep in mind that some hotels in the villages of the Lake Atitlan will not take cards, nor is there an ATM. You can use an ATM in Panajachel if you need, before getting on the boat to the hotel. Please talk to your guide.
Is it ok to bargain for textiles/gifts/souvenirs?
Yes, in Guatemala, it is customary to bargain for prices in markets. Prices can differ drastically, so make sure to name the price you’re comfortable with.
Can I take pictures of locals?
It is always polite and encouraged to ask before you take pictures, but most people won’t mind. If they shy away from the camera it’s a good idea to look for another subject.
How much do I tip in Guatemala?
Tipping is never mandatory in Guatemala, but always a nice gesture.
Most restaurants/ cafes will include a tip on the bill, if not, 10% is a fine tip.
For our drivers if you want to tip them we recommend between $3 - $5 per day
Per group member as a nice tip
For your staff guides, if you would like to tip them at the end of the trip, we recommend $75-100$ per The whole tour per group member as a nice tip to each guide.
Any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
Enjoy your trip!
