- Hike 4 Unique Microclimates
Day 1: Ascent to Camp
Your adventure kicks off at 8:00 AM from the lobby hotel meeting point, heading to the tranquil mountain village of La Soledad (an hour’s drive from Antigua). From there, the hike will immerse you in four distinct microclimates along Volcán Acatenango. We’ll start with an uphill trek through farm fields, then move into a dense tropical cloud forest—home to rich biodiversity and, possibly, the Quetzal.
Emerging from the forest, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of other highland volcanoes (Atitlán, Tolimán, San Pedro, Santa María, Santo Tomás, Tajumulco) and the Cuchumatanes mountain range. We’ll pause for a campsite lunch. The route continues through coniferous and dry forests, leading us to our base camp at ~3750m (~12,300ft), strategically located just below the tree line. From here, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Antigua valley and the imposing Volcán Fuego. You can rest while your guide prepares a comforting hot dinner with tea and coffee.
Day 2: Summit Push and Descent
The day begins with an early breakfast at camp, fueling up for the final 45-minute ascent to Acatenango’s summit. This steepest section takes you along a sand and gravel trail to the rocky peak, exposed to cold, gusty winds.
Once at the summit, the reward is unparalleled: 360-degree panoramic views of the entire Guatemalan highlands, stretching all the way to the Mexican border. After enjoying the views for about 45 minutes (depending on conditions), we’ll begin the 3-hour descent back towards La Soledad. We have the option to take an alternate route, allowing you to experience even greater diversity of microclimates and scenic trails. From La Soledad, transport will take you back to Antigua, arriving around 1:00 PM, leaving you ample time to explore the charms of the old Spanish colonial capital.
